Encounter #22:
Persistence, Pressure & Peers
Read: Mark 6:14-29

King Herod Antipas was suspiciously fearful that Jesus was John the Baptist risen from the dead. Herod Antipas' father was King Herod the Great (the one who killed the babies when Jesus was born). Antipas' brothers were Aristobulus and Philip. Philip's wife was Herodias. But Antipas, being already married to the King of Arabia's daughter, wanted his brother Philip's wife, Herodias. So, Antipas divorces his wife and marries his brother's wife. John the Baptist kept telling him that it was wrong and against God's law. John was put in prison because of Herodias. She wanted him dead, but Antipas considered John a righteous and holy prophet. John was persistent in his message. We need to be persistent in proclaiming the truth of God's Word no matter the cost.

It was King Herod Antipas' birthday. It was a convenient time for Herodias to bring her sinister plan to pass – to have John killed. Herod feared John, but John did not fear Herod. Herodias had her daughter, Salome dance for Herod. Her dance was seductive and pleased Herod. He said he would give her anything see wanted. She went to her mother and asked what she should do. Herodias wanted John's head on a silver plate. Because the pressure was on, and Herod's peers were at his party, he couldn't go back on his word. Pressure and peers caused Herod to comply to Herodias. John was killed. Herod was miserable. Herodias and Salome were glad. John was in heaven. Jesus and the disciples were sad.

The Word will always expose sin. People will hear you until sin is mentioned. They will either repent or reject what you say. But be bold.

Prayer: Heavenly Father help me not to give into the negative pressure of my surroundings, and the ungodliness of my peers. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Application: Be persistent in proclaiming God's Word. The Truth sets people free. Don't let circumstances nor people hinder, prevent or stop you from preaching, teaching and living the Bible. There's a cost, but it's worth it.
Encounter Jesus: Jesus is with you to give you boldness, anointing, favor and protection as you step out in faith to declare the Word.
