Encounter #7:

Lord of the Sabbath
Read: Mark 2:23-28

The Sabbath Day is considered to be the 7th day (Saturday). But every day should be a Sabbath for us. As Christians we set aside Sunday as our “Sabbath” because Jesus rose from the dead and the disciples often gathered on the “first day of the week: (Acts 20:7; 1 Corin.16:2).

Here are some facts about the Sabbath Day. God blessed the 7th day and made it holy (Gen.2:3). It was given for our spiritual and physical well-being. It's a day to re-affirm our trust in the Lord (by going to Church), and not our trust in the world (staying home). It renews our initial commitment to Jesus and other believers. It is a sign to the world that we have given ourselves to the Lord. By going to church on the “Sabbath,” it is a time for God to speak and act on our behalf. We follow Jesus' example because He went to the Synagogue (Luke 4:16). It gets the Devil mad. And Your gifts are needed by others.

King David ate some of the shewbread. It was only to be eaten by the priests. The priests made the 12 loaves every Sabbath. It represented dedication to God and was the Bread of His Presence. Also, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 23:25 as justification of His disciples picking corn. The Sabbath is to be a blessing. It is a gift, provision and benefit to us. It is not a burden, hurt nor drudgery. By honoring the Lord and attending Church, you have favor for the rest of the week. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. He made it for us. It tells us and the world that Jesus is Lord, the Son of God and Messiah.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me rest in Jesus. Jesus, you are the Lord of the Sabbath. Help me to honor You and obey You. Give me a deeper love for You and Your Church. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Application: Recognize that Jesus loves you and His Church. Pray for your Church, it's leaders and people. Be attentive to their needs. Be faithful to how the Lord wants you to be involved. Reaffirm your commitment to Jesus and His House.
Encounter Jesus: Receive His strength & power now.
